JAPN 101 Elementary Japanese (First Semester)- Students can take credit by exam for any and all of the levels if they have knowledge or proficiency; they will receive the grade they get on the tests. Native speakers wishing to follow the native speaker path will be assessed by the department for native speaker proficiency.

Major elective- Major elective: JAPN 121 Introduction to Japanese Culture, JAPN 123/123H Japanese Anime and Manga (typically offered fall only), JAPN 210 Intermediate Conversation I and Reading (prior completion of JAPN 102 or three years of high school Japanese with a C or better required; typically offered fall or spring; may be taken in Year 2), or JAPN 211 Intermediate Conversation II and Writing (prior completion of JAPN 210 required; typically offered fall or spring).
- JAPN 121 can be taken concurrently with another Japanese language course.
